On Hope

What Remains After Loss

When someone is gone, the question is what stays behind.

In the years after my sister died, I kept returning to a single question. Not why she was taken, though I asked that too. But something quieter and more enduring: what remains?

When someone we love is gone, it can feel as though everything went with them. The future you imagined. The conversations you'll never have. The version of your life that included them. Grief, at first, is a catalogue of everything that is missing.

But sit with it long enough, and you begin to notice what stayed.

Love remains. Not as a memory kept behind glass, but as something living. The love you gave them does not vanish because they are no longer here to receive it. It stays in you, and it keeps working, shaping how you love everyone who comes after.

Hope remains, though it hides for a while beneath the sorrow. It returns in unexpected places, a vivid dream, a glimpse of someone in a crowd who moves the way they did, a moment of unexplained comfort. Hope has a way of blooming again where you least expect it.

Remembrance remains. We keep them with us in the smallest, most ordinary ways. We wear their favorite color. We play their favorite song. We tell their stories until the people who never met them can picture them clearly. The world slowly becomes one vast act of remembering.

Connection remains. Grief, for all its isolation, binds us to one another. Strangers who have lost someone recognize it in each other instantly. Some of the deepest friendships are born from shared sorrow. Loss opens a door between people that nothing else can.

And you remain. Broken open, yes. Reshaped by what happened. But still here, still loving, still hoping, still carrying them forward into every day they never got to see.

That is what I have come to believe, after all these years. Love does not end when someone dies. It simply changes form. And if you pay attention, you will find it comes back around, in green eyes, in a familiar song, in the recognition that the people we love are never entirely gone.

Love does not end when someone dies. It only changes form, and it comes back around.
